Season Updates

This year I am testing using in-ground raised beds rather than a more standard row approach. After three inches of rain in a week, the ground is clearly saturated. Nearly half my garden is planted and a third sprouted, so flooded ground could hinder my garden start real quickly. With ponds visible in fields nearby and standing water in my garden today, I am more thankful than ever that I chose to make raised beds this spring. They have been drying out enough between rains to continue planting even when the pathways remain muddy. As shown in the picture, the beds are also tall enough to avoid being flooded themselves…this time at least.

If your garden struggles with drainage or is simply in a low part of your yard, consider creating your own raised beds and see if it helps.
